What Is San Francisco Doing To Increase Composting?

San Francisco is probably America’s most eco-friendly city. It currently recycles an amazing 72% of its waste and has a successful public transport system.

Now, the city hopes to increase that recycling rate to 90% with the introduction of mandatory composting.

The San Francisco Board Of Supervisors voted 9-2 to require residents and businesses to sort recyclables, general rubbish and recyclables for weekly collection. Those failing to comply with the new ordinances, which take effect in the autumn, will be hit with fines.

Can Removing Trays Reduce Waste?

Some of the techniques to reduce food waste are simple. One being tried in US colleges is to remove trays in campus cafeterias.

Universities believe that removing trays can help reduce food waste by as much as 30 percent, as well as saving money Pomona College Dean of Students Miriam Feldblum talked to the Los Angeles Times about unconscious waste:

“When you ask people, ‘How often do you put something on your tray that you wind up not eating?’ they’ll think about it and say, ‘Quite often,” she said. “It’s rare someone will say, ‘I eat everything on my tray.’”
