Cutting out coal: Reducing Duke’s Carbon Footprint


On Feb. 19, 2009, Duke employees gathered to celebrate the last coal delivery by rail car at Duke’s West Campus Steam Plant. The event marked the end of an era and an important step toward reducing Dukes use of coal. By tapping into other fuel sources, Duke is expected to cut its coal consumption by approximately 70 percent within the next year. By next winter, an historic steam plant off East Campus is expected to re-open. It will burn natural gas, which produces lower emissions and greenhouse gases than coal.
