How Does A TV Show Reduce Its Carbon Footprint?

Jack Bauer on ‘24′ is used to dealing with threats to the world. And now he’s dealing with global warming. Not actually Jack Bauer himself, but the producers of the popular television series. They’re claiming that the seventh series is now the world’s first carbon-neutral TV production.

The producers, Imagine Entertainment and 20th Century Fox’, hired consultants to calculate the production’s carbon footprint. Carbon emissions were reduced by such methods as using biodiesel in trucks and generators, using low-energy bulbs in the lighting, only electronically distributing scripts and installing sensors in the bathrooms and kitchens that made the lights more efficient.

The electricity that was used, was bought, at a higher price, from utilities using solar and wind power.

‘24′ would be pretty boring without car crashes and location shooting, but these aren’t environmentally friendly. So the producers bought carbon offsets to ‘pay’ for 1,239 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, just over a half season’s worth of CO2 emissions. The carbon offsets were paid to a wind power plant in India, producing ‘clean’ energy.

To add to their carbon reduction activities, ads are being shown by the producers during the show’s US run promoting the global warming debate. Let’s hope they find their targets as well as Jack Bauer does!
