One of the main challenge of the 21′st century is the increased sustainability and competitiveness of the agricultural and food industrial production, while safeguarding consumer health, decreasing environmental impacts and taking account of climate change, in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. For land based biological resources, special emphasis to be placed on low-input and organic production systems and improved management of resources, with prime concern of optimal recycling and reuse of agro/ food industrial wast streams.

The 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY innovation started up late 80′s and the RTD programmes accelerated after 2002, when EU started to large scale support the development programme (EU-FP5 Multi Fuel, EU-FP6 Protector, CIP-ECOINNOVATION), aiming at enhancing the reuse of organic waste in agriculture and food industry, in order to reduce the use of mineral fertiliser in crop production and minimise the negative impact of agriculture on the environment and on climate change. As a result of the innovation the 3R contributing to the reduction of chemicals use in agriculture, stimulating industrial innovation by improving the bio-waste treatment process and by improving the quality and safety of the final products, including more efficient utilisation of the final products by the end-users while developing new application methods.

In this context during past decade the 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY build up an bridge between higher education, research and development, and business enterprises for joint RTD and commercial application of new carbon biorefinery technique, consisting of two major technology groups, such as: ZERO-EMISSIONconversion of agro/food industrial waste info refined carbons by integrated pyrolysis thermal and biotech treatments, and CARBON-NEGATIVE applications for agricultural, horticultural and forest nursery purposes.

High qualitative science and technology knowledge and innovation generated with high efficient utilization of the innovative potential and resources of knowledge by integrating several EU programmes in 10 countries, while partnerships established between various actors of a knowledge-based economy. During the innovation process academics, SME’s, NGO’s and industrial organizations combined for coherent innovation works with improved connection and communication among one another and across national borders. Knowledge and Innovation Centre established in West Hungary (Polgardi), including construction of “product-like” 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY technology pilot plant, while true value field tests made all over Europe and Israel to demonstrate technical and economical viability, while interlinking applied science and marked driven economical industrial applications.

In this context the new 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY technology opens new technical, economical and environmental opportunities for sustainable development.

The 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY provides solid Trans-European knowledge-base innovative technologies for recycling and upgrading of bone meal for environmentally friendly crop protection and nutrition which contributes to the competitiveness and sustainability of major European Eco-industries and bio-based economy. The AGROCARBON measurable, justified and verified scientific and technological achievements will open new technical and economical perspectives for the competitive European vegetable production industry, resulting in safer, higher quality and less costly vegetables for the Consumer.

The 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY realized Consumer-demanded “farm-to-fork” vegetable and food products that are both safe and affordable. Considering the fact that vegetables are the second most important food supply after dairy products in the EU, the AGROCARBON activities strengthening the scientific and technological knowledge base that is required to improve the health and well-being of European citizens; this will be achieved through a higher quality of food, improved control of food production practices and of related environmental factors.

The objective of the 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY is the added value upgrading/ valorisation of plant and/or animal bone origin agro/food industrial organic by-product streams into safe and useful soil amendment products by integrated thermal and biotechnological zero emission recycling means.

The medium to large scale capacity 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY industrial process outputs providing carbon negative product applications, primarily re-used in the horticultural industry for safe vegetable productions in in soil and soil-less low-input and organic farming cultivations. EU Authority permitted both for industrialized carbon processing and output AGROCARBON soil application in open ecological soil environment. The 3R is patented original solution and comprehensive industrial design, which development is priority supported by the EU since 2001.

The 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY process provides high efficient carbon conversion both for plant based biomass and/or animal bone meals as well. Which feeds are selected is all depending on feed availability, logistics and production objectives, however, when natural Phosphorous is the economical valorization aim, than animal bone must be used.

The 3R-AGROCARBON-BIOREFINERY process is based on a horizontally arranged indirectly heated rotary kiln, providing reductive thermal decomposition of any plant/animal biomass up to 850 degree C in vacuum, with zero emission performance comprehensive recycling and reuse of process gases. Standard capacity is from 30,000 m3/year throughput. The AGROCARBON product is further upgraded biotechnologically by Solid-State-Fermentation-Formulation, designed to specifically selected soil microbiological consortiums. The process upgrades biomass waste/by-products into high added value, safe, economical and efficient biological crop protection, plant growth promotion and natural fertilization products for environmentally friendly horticultural cultivations in soil and soil-less low-input and organic farming.

Just a brief overview, global warming is the excessive accretion of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Examples of the gases which contribute to the global warming are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. By the thought itself, everything that is in excess might create a negative impact. And that is the state that we are all currently experiencing and suffering from.

Among the gases mentioned, the commonly considered hazardous to human health are the carbon dioxide which is generated through the combustion of fuels containing carbon found in car engines and coal-powered plants and methane which is the result upon decomposition of biological matter.

How these greenhouse gases do contribute to global warming? For a fact, the greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere traps and accumulate the heat which should have been reflected out of the earth’s surface, resulting to warming it up. Several factors were identified to have contributed to the said phenomenon.

Global warming causes tremendous effects which are of alarming concern not only by the government but of the entire citizenry. As this condition continues, the accumulated heat within earth’s surface causes the melting of the polar ice caps and the rising of sea levels leading to the flooding of low-lying coastal areas. In some areas, excessive drying up of soil is also noticeable which may lead to poor vegetation leading to the starvation of the entire community. Unpredictable weather and cause and occurrence of natural and unanticipated calamities became prevalent and rampant such as high intensity earthquakes, tsunamis, flood, landslides, and volcanic eruptions which have destroyed millions of lives.

Wood Smoke/black Carbon Soot: a Major Cause of Global Warming

In the frenzied search for solutions to the global warming crisis, climatologists, policy makers and other concerned environmentalists have overlooked one of the leading causes of rising temperatures around the globe—soot—the black residue that coats fireplaces and darkens vehicle exhaust. Black carbon soot may in fact be the second largest contributor to global warming next to the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

According to Stanford environmental engineering Professor Mark Z. Jacobson, “Soot, or black carbon, may be responsible for 15 to 30 percent of global warming, yet it is not even considered in any of the discussions about controlling climate change.” (“Nature”, ScienceDaily, Feb. 9, 2001). Jacobson also observed that human beings produce most of the soot particles that pollute the atmosphere. He maintains that soot consists primarily of elemental carbon and that 90 percent of it comes from the consumption of fossil fuels (particularly coal, diesel fuel, jet fuel, natural gas, kerosene) and the burning of wood and other biomass. Jacobson also claims that a worldwide reduction in soot emissions and controlling biomass burning could quell the alarming pace of global warming and also reduce our reliance on soot-producing fuels. Besides its impact on global warming, soot is bad for your health. The World Health Organization reports that approximately 2.7 million people die each year from air pollution and that reduction of wood and other biomass burning would mitigate global warming and would also save lives and improve people’s health.

Other studies have dispelled the myth that burning wood and other biomass is “green or carbon neutral” and that the fine particulates emitted during the combustion process actually hasten climate change. (www.burningissues.org under both “Science” and “Global Warming” headings).

The warming effect of black carbon soot is far greater than previously estimated

Atmospheric scientist V. Ramanathan of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and University of Iowa chemical engineer Greg Carmichael found that “black carbon soot, from burning wood and other biomass, cooking with solid fuels, and diesel exhaust has a warming effect in the atmosphere three to four times greater than prevailing estimates.” (Nature Geoscience 1, 221-227 (March 24, 2008). They calculated that soot and other forms of black carbon particulates may represent as much as 60 percent of the current global warming effect of carbon dioxide and their findings correlated with similar studies from Stanford, Caltech, and NASA.

A simplified explanation for the warming effect is that wood smoke’s fine particulates thin clouds. And as total airborne particulates increase, cloud cover decreases, allowing more sunlight to reach the earth. According to Ramanathan, approximately 35 percent of black carbon in the global atmosphere comes from China and India. Yet per capita emissions of black carbon soot from the United States and some European countries is still comparable to those from Asia. Ramanathan’s research also found that the warming effects of black carbon smog appear to be accelerating the melt of Himalayan glaciers, leading to early drying of a major source of drinking water for billions of people throughout Asia.

The International Global Panel on Climate Change (IGPCC) agreed that black carbon soot is a major contributor to global warming

The 2007 Nobel-winning IGPCC panel of approximately two thousand scientists concluded that black carbon soot has a dire atmospheric warming effect. This was significant because soot had previously been unaddressed as a major contributor to global warming. Nor had the amplification of black carbon’s warming effect previously been taken into account when mixed with other aerosols, creating additional secondary fine particulates.

Studies of fine particulates from wood smoke in various communities

An EPA study cites that “In some neighborhoods, on some days, 90% of the particle pollution is from residential wood burning.” (Jane Koenig and Timothy Larson, A Summary of Emissions Characterization and Non-Cancer Respiratory Effects of Wood Smoke, USEPA DOC #453/R-93-036,1-919-541-0888).

A study in two San Jose, California locations showed that wood smoke pollution was 4.4 times that of gasoline or diesel fueled vehicles. (“A Comparison of Source Apportionments of Fine Particulate Matter at Two San Jose, CA Locations,” from San Jose Speciation Trends Network.)

The next step

Because the urgency of reducing black carbon emissions cannot be overstated, reducing soot from wood smoke would offer nearly instant benefits in improving atmospheric conditions in the United States. It would also offer immediate societal and health benefits. This would facilitate political and regulatory momentum towards mitigation of black carbon emissions.

It is urgent to advance public awareness of wood smoke’s crucial role in global warming with education and policy changes.
