Different forms of energy sources have helped us in many ways from running our vehicles to cooking at home or generating electricity. There are two types of energy sources – renewable and non-renewable energy resources. The former is where the energy resources do not get depleted and they can be used repeatedly whereas non-renewable energy resources cannot be used again and again.

We cannot even imagine a life without the existence of fossil fuels like crude oil; coal and natural gas but usage of these energy resources creates lot of problems. Global warming, increase in prices of fossil fuels and the threat of peak oil are major concerns around the globe but what steps are we taking to overcome all these issues? If we stop consuming fossil fuels, we can stop global warming and save non renewable energy resources for our future generations to deploy but at the same time we need to seek an alternative to meet our requirements. We come cross these topics on television, internet and magazines and there is a lot of debate going on with regards to these topics. Is it possible for us to overcome this crisis? Only alternative energy solutions can help us as well as our environment to some extent.

Industries that deal with alternative energy solutions like solar and wind power thrive hard to save our environment. Even though modern technologies are being implemented to extract crude oil from places, which weren’t reachable earlier; it’s still not possible to meet the growing demand. The demand for fossil fuels is increasing due to the rapid increase in population growth. alternative energy solutions have lot of benefits when compared to non renewable energy resources. Industries have started investing their time and money in researching as well as setting up power plants. With the support provided by government in the form of incentives and the huge demand for renewable energy resources in future, companies can invest in alternative energy stocks, as their business will flourish in the long run.

Certain home users hesitate to go for alternative energy solutions as initial investment needs to be made but once the equipment is installed; there won’t be any maintenance costs or other repetitive costs. Apart from the set up cost, energy from the sun and wind will always be free in any part of the country and there is no need for being dependent upon other countries. On the other hand, the prices of renewable energy resources keep increasing and certain countries have to be dependent upon major oil producing countries. Home users who consume alternative energy resources can cut down on their electricity bills.

Every system has its own pros and cons but the best and wise thing to do is weigh the options that are available and choose the energy resource that offers long-term benefits. When it comes to alternative energy solutions, setting up solar plants and building windmills is a huge and complicated process but once they are set up, they offer endless benefits. In case of fossil fuels, oil companies need to locate the proven reserves, dig oil wells, extract oil and convert into a more usable form so that it can reach the end consumer.

It’s funny that as humans evolve, things get back to the basics. This is especially true in the environment front. We have learned that if we want a hospitable planet for our children’s future, we must protect the Earth now.

Every grade school child knows the importance of reuse, reduce, and recycle; what better way to help the planet and learn about biology than with composting right in your own backyard garden? It also saves you money as you won’t have to worry about buying commercial fertilizer. It’s all in your kitchen scraps!

How does composting work?

Compost is really the end product of the breakdown of organic matter. Microorganisms feed off organic matter and what’s left is compost.

When people say they want to compost, there are two options. One can decide for a passive process or an active process.

As the name implies, there is little work to be done in the passive process. One just needs to collect compost material such as grass clippings and kitchen refuse and put them in an closed off pile in the backyard. Make sure that the kitchen scraps are well covered with other organic material to avoid animals looking for a free meal!

While little effort is required in the passive approach to composting, it is indeed slow and you might be waiting well over a year or two for complete decomposition.

Active composting requires more work, but not much with the proper equipment. Active composting is just helping nature along by providing the right conditions for the decomposition process. Decomposition is faster when the organic material is kept in a warm, damp and well oxygenated environment. By having a compost bin, not only does it provide a neater appearance in your backyard but it also offers a controlled environment in which to produce your compost. Add a thermometer to a compost tumbler to turn over the compost and it’s got a great mix for composting.

As you can see, the effort involved in composting is not that much but the benefits of using compost are many. The byproducts of microorganisms breaking down organic material provides great nutrients for plants as well as the compost is nitrogen and potassium rich which helps maintain ideal soil condition. Compost also improves water retention in the soil as well as texture and aeration.

Other benefits of composting include the reduction of wastes into our landfill. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, it’s important that our children inherit a healthy planet. And what better way to pass on our gift than by involving our children in the process as well. Every school aged child knows about reduce, reuse and recycle. Composting involves all these steps plus the benefit of watching your garden grow! What a practical lesson for any child.

Wind turbines do not make annoyance. The development of wind farm technology over the past was linked to high levels of mechanical noise, but newly developed wind turbines operate quietly. They are now becoming popular for small and large applications.
